A Beautiful MESS, Design Team Post - Our Creative Corner

========

Howdy from Joi@RR.

It is so hard to believe June has arrived.
It's summer and with it another fun challenge at:

How about getting messy?? Can you do it???
Create for me....
 A BEAUTIFUL MESS.

Here is my take:

Yes - this is very unkempt and messy for me!
I just let the mixed media products go helter skelter and it just turned out to be what it is - there was no plan at all.
I sooo wanted to get meticulous and draw some cactus roses and cacti that "looked" like cacti!!  BUT... I slapped my hand.
Trust me when I say... this is VERY messy for me.

Plus I used a bunch of different brand products too!!

Including the OUR CREATIVE CORNER sponsor for June:

Their products are so unique and quirky - I love visiting their site. You should take a look at their fun designs!
--------

The first photo is just DecoArt Media gesso.  I literally played with it - with the brush and with my fingers. Talk about a mess! But it was fun to make all the "texture" with the gesso.

Soooo fun - taking Ranger Vermillion Archival Ink and sliding it across all the ridges of gesso on the 16x20 canvas board.

And then, out came the Ranger Adirondak Alchohol Inks.
The bottom half was: Lemonade and Citrus.

The top half inks are:
Cool Peri, Cloudy Blue, Sail Boat Blue

The Vermillion Archival Ink must not have been quite dry because it blended right in with the Adirondak inks - loved it.

I added a line of red across the center, thinking I would just let it drip down into the bottom, but it looked like it could be mountains... so I decided to leave it.  :)

Continuing with the messy fun, out came the Dylusions Paints in bright and bold colors!  I used my fingers and a stipple brush.

At this point, it appeared it was going to be a desert scene.  Hehehehe - never suspected THAT in the beginning.  Thought it would be some kind of abstract Pretty Mess.  I decided it should have a sunset/sunrise with glass beads.

Still in messy mode, playing with whatever my eyes landed upon.... it was off for a fun time with the Caran de'Arch Neocolor II.
Just adding some watercolor foliage.

Using the Lost Coast Designs Sun and Stars 8" border, I stamped on some 'undergrowth' to my desert floor with Ranger Vermillion Archival Ink.

It just seems like I needed some cactus too! Out came The Crafters Workshop Balzar Designs Mini Circles stencil.

I used my Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft Big Brush and Pitt Pens to enhance the cacti as well as add color to the bushes.

Needing some shimmer and shading for the sunrise/sunset and the mountains.... I used ColourArte Silks Acrylic Glaze.  These were some of the very first paints I purchased when I began painting and I still enjoy working with them every time I use them.  They are just transparent enough to let whats underneath show.

Lastly I worked on the streaks in the sunrise/sunset!
I used DecoArt Media Matt Medium with my Faber Castell Big Brush Pens and my fingers to make the streaks in the sky.  As well as to highlight the mountain peaks and valleys.

Here are some close-up pictures.  It really is quite vividly bright.

Thanks bunches for stopping by to see my 'Mess'! I so so appreciate your comments and do not take them for granted at all.

Hugs. j.

Oh, Joi, I KNOW you do not take comments for granted1 You are such a sweetheart and my day is brightened just by visiting your blog! I can only imagine how bright my day would be if I met you in person!

Your canvas mess is just perfect! I love the bold colors the texture, the content, and for some strange reason those cacti just hypnotize me! Wow! And I so enjoyed reading through your process; I truly am at the edge of my seat taking in all the details.

I pray your ranch is not in harms way of all the flooding down there. My niece (another one) is in Corpus and is/has been having flooding issues. Not sure about my sister--she has plenty of issues!

Big hugs to you, my dear! I'm so happy my internet is cooperating and I can visit. I'm off to see what else I've missed!

Joi your ability to pull together an experimental beginning to your piece to a brilliant mixed media composition excites me so much. Mediums, inks, paints are magic in your hands and wow your beautiful mess becomes a glorious desert sunset. You are an artistic magician indeed, thank you for such amazing inspiration xxx

Your sun is so incredible, what a genius idea to use the glass bead gel for that! Your cacti are just popping off the page! If this were a real place, I would be there with bells on for sure! You sure did capture the spirit of the challenge theme, this is the most beautiful mess I've ever seen!! Hope you are safe from the horrible weather where you are. sending hugs :)
